Medical packaging materials can be divided into two categories: reusable packaging materials and disposable packaging materials.
Packaging begins with the selection of appropriate packaging materials and methods. In addition to the sterilization method, the packaging method should also consider the sterilization items. People have done a lot of research on this, and many kinds of medical packaging materials can also be seen on the market.
Understanding the sterilization method and packaging requirements can help the disinfection supply center personnel make the right decision when selecting packaging materials. The situation faced by the personnel of the disinfection supply center is that various packaging materials have been used in the workplace. However, just because no one packaging material is applicable to all sterilization methods, there is still a process of selection in specific use.
Only packaging materials specially designed for sterilization and approved by FDA can be used. In addition, for various specific sterilization methods, there are also some basic requirements as follows:
Pressure steam sterilization
The medical packaging materials must be able to withstand the high temperature of 121 ℃ - 135 ℃, the emission of air, the penetration of water vapor and the drying of packaging materials and contents;
Ethylene oxide sterilization
The medical packaging materials must allow the penetration and discharge of ethylene oxide gas (ventilation process);
Dry heat sterilization
Medical packaging materials must withstand the high temperature of 160 ℃ - 204 ℃ within 2 – 3 hours without melting, burning or other reactions;
plasma sterilization
The medical packaging materials must withstand extreme vacuum, do not absorb the sterilizing agent, do not affect the sterilization cycle, and have no damage to the articles to be sterilized.
In addition to selecting the correct packaging materials, the staff of the disinfection supply center should also know how to properly use the above packaging materials, so as to achieve the design purposes of the sterilization agent penetration, sterile barrier and sterile opening of the packaging materials.
